Last night I took my first stab at food photography. I was in the middle of making one of my favorite stand by's for cooler weather - this corn and kielbasa chowder. It's not only easy to make, it's delicious and it's a soup that only takes 30 or so minutes to make. You can't beat that! I decided I'd do a little photographic journey while cooking my favorite homemade soup. Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS
8 ounces kielbasa, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced
2 onions, finely chopped
1 tablespoon butter
One 14.5-ounce can chicken broth
1 large baking potato (about 12 ounces), peeled and cut into 1/2-inch cubes
1 cup half-and-half
One 1-pound bag frozen corn, thawed
Salt and pepper
Chopped fresh dill, for garnish
1. Heat a deep skillet or a wide 4- to 6-quart pot over medium-high heat. Add the kielbasa and cook, stirring, until lightly browned, about 6 minutes. Transfer to a plate.
2. Add the onions and butter to the pan and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until golden, about 6 minutes.
Add the broth and potato and bring to a boil.
Reduce the heat, cover with a lid and simmer until the potato is tender, about 10 minutes.
Add the half-and-half and corn and cook, stirring, until heated through.
3. Using a blender or food processor, puree 1 cup chowder until smooth. Stir the puree back into the chowder along with the browned kielbasa and season to taste with salt and pepper. Top with the dill.

Post a CommentLooks incredible. Maybe I will try it. We have lots of sausage from North Dakota.
It's definitely one of my "comfort foods" Any soup with corn in it does the trick for me!
And it seems like it wouldn't be hard to have ingredients like this readily available. Though I don't know if I could use any more comfort on the caboose.
Looks good
for the photos you need a drop of fill flash and it will open them up

what's that mean???
More light in the front would open up the photos (not so dark). A lot of food photographers use reflectors (white or silver board) to bounce light off of to fill the dark areas with light. If you are using anything other then a point and shoot this can be done with a regular flash. With a point and shoot I would suggest bringing another light source into the area just off to the side and let it light the area. Sorry I am better at show then explain.

you took those pics Sy? very nice!
I know this will probably make everyone hate me, but.... y'all know these aren't my cupcakes right? I've never claimed they were, usually they just represent some that I've either baked or will be baking, but they are not actually mine. The thing is that I don't have a good camera, so I can't take such awesome shots.
I hope you're not terribly disappointed!
OMG they are not your CC. I am crushed. I will now go burry my sorry in chocolate.
If you bake, I will test and photograph them.

I already knew that Cab! And never thought less of you for it! So no worries!
Sam, I'm using a DSLR. I hate using a flash though, maybe I need to just play around with the flash compensation, but I feel like when I use the flash the picture just loses something.
Any suggestions would be welcomed!!
P.S. a lightbulb in our kitchen just went out, so maybe that, too, could have been a problem. We're too lazy to go buy a new one!
YUMMY! Looks good Sy!
I only say this because on a thread on CS a while back Steph made some snarky comment about how I steal cupcakes and I thought, Well I've never claimed they are mine and I distinctly remmeber saying one day that I don't have a good enough camera for them to be mine.... but then I thought, maybe I'm leading people on....
..... maybe I'm a cupcake tease....
I am going to assume you have a hot sync (flash shoe) on top of your camera for your flash. Put the flash on it and tilt it up so that it is at 45º angle or more angle (definitely less then 180º and more then 90º). Get a small piece of white cardboard and cut it so it is the width of the flash maybe 3" deep and tape it to the top of the flash. The flash will go up and the board should "bounce" it back down. You have probably seen the images of the paparazzi with this on their cameras. I hope I am being clear enough.

And go buy a new bulb so you do not burn yourself or worse add sugar instead of salt. BUY BULB OR NO RITAS FOR YOU!

Very cool Sam! Hey by the way since you're so good at being my mom, my hubby did go talk to our neighbor on Friday! So all is clear and well now.
I've got a rough idea about what you're talking about, I'll do some googling and reading up to get a better picture. You're giving me some ideas on what to ask for Christmas!!
Cab, anyone who took the time out to ask you about your cupcake would know the truth. I asked, you told me. I don't see how that could make you a tease.
Okay Bogdan gets his Rita's right after he buys a light bulb for the kitchen. You can never have to many caring moms. Nagging ones- yes, caring ones - no.
Off topic a little- Just got my copy of Pink (small business mag for women) and on the over is MO with the title "who is the real michelle obama?" I nearly choked on my lunch when I saw it.

Now I know why I hate this magazine. On their website there is no search engine and this is the November issue and they only have the September & October issue up. If it didn't show up for free in my mail I never would subscribe to it. The article is a puff piece.
